How to Change Your Apple ID Password
It’s not like any other service where you can hit Forget Password and you are done in 2-3 simple steps.
Apple created a dedicated website to reset the password. Moreover, you will have to go to appleid.apple.com where you will be able to configure the profile and also will be able to reset the password.
Before we dive into the steps and process, you should know that it will enhance the security of your Apple ID if you enable the two-factor authentication.
Change Apple ID Password Using an iPhone
Apple devices like the iPad and iPhone work on iOS, and you will need to follow these steps to answer your question of “How to change Apple ID password?”
Step 1: You will need to open the Settings app and tap on your name, i.e., your account, placed on the top of other Settings options.
Step 2: You will find the option of Password and Security right below the Name, Phone number, and Email tab.
Step 3: Tap the Change Password option on the top and follow the instructions shown further on the screen.
It may also happen that you are not logged in to your Apple account and if that’s the case, you will not be able to change the password from the method mentioned above. Tap the Sign In option and if you don’t remember the ID, tap on don’t have an ID/Forgot It.

Reset/Change Apple ID Password on Mac
The password of your Apple ID can also be changed from the macOS where you will need to follow the steps mentioned below.
Step 1: On the home screen, click on the Apple logo on the top-left corner of your screen. Click on the System Preferences….
Step 2: Among various options, select iCloud.
Step 3: Click on the Account Details tab present under the profile picture.
Step 4: From the horizontal menu, click Security and then click the first option that says Change Password.
Step 5: The system will ask you to enter the Mac password, enter it and hit Ok.
Step 6: The system will ask you to enter the new password and then re-enter to verify. You must also note that the Apple ID password change must contain 8 characters and should include numbers, upper and lowercase alphabets.
Step 7: Hit Change and then done in order to finish the process.
Change Apple ID password using Email and Security Questions
This method is going to be very useful for the times when or if you have lost your device. This process will need you to reset or change the password using some other device’s browser.
Step 1: Open a web browser and go to appleid.apple.com and hit Forgot Apple ID password.
Step 2: If you remember the Apple ID then enter it and hit Continue. If not, then click Look it up that will be a clickable link.
Step 3: The system will ask you to enter the information like name and email address. Now, go ahead and press Continue and then move further and follow the instructions that are given on-screen.
Step 4: After entering the Apple ID, the system will give you the option to reset the password.
Step 5: Then, you will get the option to select the mode to reset the password using the security questions or get an email or you can enter the phone number. Enter the details and then you will receive an email with further details.
You will be asked to log in to all the devices again once the password is changed.
Reset/Change Apple ID password using Two Factor Authentication
If you have enabled the Two Factor Authentication, which is not the same as two-factor verification, you can easily change the password using the devices you added as trusted. This mode can be applied from different devices and portals.

When you even think that I forgot my Apple ID password, this is enough to get you in the panic mode, however, if you have set two-factor authentication, there isn’t much to worry about. You can follow the steps below to change the password using the trusted devices you saved while setting up.
Step 1: Open Safari and enter iforgot.apple.com and it will ask you to enter the phone number of the device you added.
Step 2: Go ahead and press Continue in order to allow the system to send a notification to the device.
Step 3: You will have to get that device and tap Allow.
Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions and you will be asked to enter the passcode then enter the new password.
However, if you don’t have access to that device anymore, it’s going to be a huge effort. You may have to wait a week or 10 days to get verified and till then you have to wait for the email to change Apple ID password.
Two-Factor Verification using Account Page
This is different from Two Factor Authentication. When you will configure this setting, you will get a recovery key. This is the key to change or reset the password.
Step 1: Go to appleid.apple.com and hit Forgot Apple ID or Password.
Step 2: Provide the system with your Apple ID and hit Continue.
Step 3: When you click the Reset Password option, the system will give a prompt to enter the Recovery Key.
Step 4: Enter the key and hit Continue.
Step 5: The next step will be to enter the new password and then click Save to apply the changes.
Reset or Change Apple ID Password using Account Recovery
This will be the last and final option to reset Apple password and it may take longer than any other method. This process is the manual submission of the request to Apple Support to help you in resetting the password.
The time of account recovery will depend on the details you remember related to your account. Moreover, if you remember as many details, still it will take a few days to get the link to reset the password. Follow the steps below to submit a request.
Step 1: Go to iforgot.apple.com, you will see an option of Request Account Recovery.
Step 2: Click it and hit Request Recovery.
Step 3: The system will ask you to enter the phone number. The number will be verified by sending a code to that number.
Step 4: When the recovery is complete, you will get a phone call or text message.
Step 5: You will need to go to iForgot again and enter the recovery key received in the text.
Step 6: You will then be able to change Apple ID password on the next page. And will also need to verify the phone number.

It will get even easier if you are doing it on your Apple device and also have another device with you which may be your trusted device. If you don’t meet the above criteria, the only thing that remains is submitting the request to Apple Support.
